Have you ever wondered what exactly those black streaks are on your roof ? Those dark "almost black" stains on your asphalt shingles and barrel tile roofs are not caused by mildew or fungus. Instead they are caused by a hardy type of blue-
Gloeocapsa magma "roof algae" thrives in the humid environments found here in the coastal south. Unfortunately it derives most of its nutrients from the calcium carbonate (the lime) that is used in the manufacture of 98% of the roofs found here in the south.
ASPHALT SHINGLES: Lime is added to the asphalt mixture during the manufacturing process of asphalt shingles as a filler to reduce the amount of asphalt needed and to give added weight to fiberglass and cellulose backing. The dark almost black color causes your roof to retain much more heat and over time this feeding process by the blackish algae on your roof will actually degrade your roofs asphalt shingles, by loosening the aggregate (the colored top coat portion of a shingle) causing the shingles to prematurly age by loss of the grandular aggregate. If not cleaned off and kept at bay roof this roof algae has the ability to shave year off your roofs life. We clean asphalt roofs safely with little or no pressure and the results are amazing.
BARREL TILE ROOFS: Gloeocapsa magma also grows on the lime contained in the cement and clay that almost all barrel tile roofs are made of, IN FACT IT THRIVES ON IT. Most modern tile roofs have a "reddish" waterproof glaze on top and over time the blackish algae slowly erodes it away. We clean cement and clay based barrel tiles roofs the safe gentle way (low pressure).
We use a chemical blend based on ARMA (Asphalt Roofing Manufactures Association) recommendations:

It’s important to remember that roof algae is a living organism that needs food to continue to grow. The primary food of roof algae is? Your shingles and tiles!
We use proprietary roof cleaning agent that will systematically kill and remove the algae and mold on your roof without the use of high pressure! Plus, our process is SAFE & EFFECTIVE and poses no risk of damage to your roof deck, home exterior or bushes and landscaping.
In fact Seapoint's roof cleaning service uses the only method that the major asphalt shingle manufactures like GAF, and Owens Corning recommends. Our blend contains proprietary surfactants that are specifically formulated for roof cleaning. Since every roof is different, all with varying amounts of algae, mold, lichen, etc, we are able to tailor our blend to meet the specific cleaning needs of each individual roof. This helps to insure that we are achieving the best results possible on every roof cleaning job that we do.
"...In many cases a clean roof can also actually increase the energy efficiency of your home by allowing the shingles to reflect and displace more heat, like they were originally designed to do. A blackish colored "infected" dirty roof is much darker and thus causes the roof deck to absorb a significant amount more of the sunlight infareds rays."
